Flag Officer: Commodore Kalydon Skirata
Commanding Officer: Captain John Sheridan (NPC)
Executive Officer: Commander Marcus Cole (NPC)

"Helm, set course for Mon Calamari. We have a trial to attend."

The Black Star hummed as it shifted course and moved away from Corellia. The Clone War era heavy cruiser had held it's own pretty well during the firefight with the overconfident Killik fleet.

"After the trial, I am personally looking forward to that new starfighter's testing stage..."

The Black Star is heading to Mon Calamari

The wait was unbearable...the wait for the beginning of the trial...

"Captain Sheridan, take over for me. I will be in the sim range with the troopers."

"Very well sir, I'll keep her in one piece until you get back." He replied.

I made my way to my quarters...thinking. Thinking of what's going to happen to Prime Unu. "I hope he gets exactly what he deserves, the treacherous little snake."

As I opened the door to my room, I saw my armor in the storage locker...
an Advanced Recon Commando's armor from the Clone War.

The red marked armor was a ghost in the dim light.

As I donned the armor, I felt a chill run down my spine...as if something bad were going to happen.
I secured the helmet and ordered the Captain to have the ship at ready status...just in case of anything.

After grabbing my rifle, and pistols, I made my way to the practice range, where my best squad of troopers awaited me...

After the training session, I felt more relaxed than usual.
We had just completed a gauntlet of taining excersizes...sharpshooting, hand to hand fighting, demolitions, close assault, the works.

I stretched, "Nothing like a bit of good old groundpounding to get yourself alert eh Sergeant?" I waved the squad off.

Sergeant Solomon yelled back, "next time you won't be so lucky Kal."
I laughed. Sergeant Solomon was the leader of Zerek squad, my best troops.

I looked hard at the men arrayed in the armor of the older Clone Troopers, these men were the finest men I had ever commanded in regards to troopers.

Private Locklear spoke up, "Sir, why do we have these blue markings on the armor?" Solomon jabbed him in the ribs.

I turned around, "Private, those markings were from the Imperial 501st Legion, made famous from the Raid on the Jedi Temple during the Great Purge. I needed something to make the armor a little more intimidating to anyone we might face on the field...and the marks of the famed "Vader's Fist" would do well in intimdation would they not?"

"Yes sir...but isn't it wrong to modify the products of Phoenix Corp.?" he asked.

"Private, it's simply paint...not like we added wrist mounted rockets...merely a new paint job."
"Although Private, I'm going to try to aqcuire some ARC trooper armor for just this squad."

I was tired, and needed something to eat, "Allright, we've done enough for now, dismissed." Zerek Squad went on their way.

I made my way to the galley to grab a bite to eat.

After returning to my room from getting my food, the comm chimed. It was Capt. Sheridan.
"Commodore, the trial will begin in roughly 6 hours, they want all participants down on the surface."
"Very well, I'm on my way to the hangar now." and then clicked the comm off.

I sighed, "And so, it begins."

I met up with Zerek squad when I got to the hangar, they would be in the shuttle with me until I landed, then they would return to the Black Star.

"Sergeant, are you and your men ready?"
"Absolutely sir, when have we ever let you down?"
"Never, and lets keep it that way."

We proceeded to board the Sentinel shuttle and left the ship.

After being given permission by Moff Jendob to leave the trial, I made my way to the landing pad to call for a pickup.

The sooner I get off this world, the better. I thought.

"Solomon, it's Skirata. Requesting retrieval."
"Loud and clear sir, on our way." He replied.

After minutes of waiting I saw the dropship make it's approach. When it landed and lowered the ramp, I stepped aboard.
"Sergeant, we're heading back to the ship."
"Yes sir."

The shuttle lifted off from the landing platform, leaving the world of Mon Calamari behind.

When we landed in the Black Star's hangar bay I chimed the bridge, "set course for Coruscant, best possible speed. And prep the Marines."

I then headed to my quarters to change...and clear my head.

The Black Star is now headed for Coruscant.

After arriving on the bridge some hours later, we had arrived at our destination.

The capital planet of the Empire, Coruscant, loomed ahead.

I looked over at Captain Sheridan.
"All the time I've spent on this ship, we've been in deep space, never this close to this world...it doesn't look all that impressive." I remarked.
Sheridan uttered a slight chuckle, "Well it is certainly is busy."
he said as he watched all the traffic come and go.

He leaned forward.
I knew he was going to say something, "What?"
"So how do you think this Galaxy Ball is going to fair?" he asked.

"Honestly, I don't know. From all the traffic on the comms, I really get the feeling some poeple actually look for things to complain about, like the Security procedures. Some, like Commander Solo of the Alliance have extreme distrust of the Empire, and I feel that no matter how we improve, he will hold on to that grudge no matter what."

Sheridan looked again at the planet, "You know, we can't make everyone hapy about this, there will always be someone unhappy about the arrangements, or the security, or some other god awful thing...simply because of our name. The most we can do is keep going and do the best job we can."

I sighed, "I know. It just frustrates me that we do so much to fix what mistakes there were, and nobody seems to care. I often wonder why we even bother."

Sheridan looked around at the bridge crew, "Well if we do nothing, who will do anything? If anyone is to fix this Empire and make it better than it was, why not let it be the current generation? Just because a few people in the Alliance carry grudges doesn't mean we should stop our improvements. If they want to stew in their own little grudges, let 'em. We'll keep on making our Empire better."

I looked around, "Yeah, I guess you're right. If we don't do it, who will?"

Commander Marcus has a slight English accent
Marcus Cole spoke up, "Should I order the shuttle to prepare for launch?"

I smiled and thought of something, "No, I have a better idea."

Marcus looked in surprise, "I assume this idea won't have anything to do with making a fly-by at the start of the ball will it?"

I smiled as I again looked out the bridge viewport, "Maybe..."

"NO! Absolutely not! No fly-by of any kind!" The Grand Marshall yelled.

"Okay, I get your point, I will land the ship outside the Business District as you said. Black Star out."
I sighed, "No sense of humor with that one I swear." I said to Sheridan.

"He's a Sovreign Protector...it comes with the territory."
"Yeah, I suppose it does...well, at least he gets the job done." I replied.

"That he does" Sheridan said.

"Well, this is going to be interesting, Helm, take us into the atmosphere to the coordinates the Grand Marshall so graciously sent us." I oredered.

The engines came to life as the massive Venator class ship headed into the Coruscant atmosphere and towards the designated landing area.

Sheridan spoke, "I'll bet the civies on-planet are loving this. All the traffic here and a Star Destroyer decides to pay a visit."
I nodded in agreement.

Flying over the great city before it, the Carrier made the final approach to the landing zone. "Touchdown in 30 seconds." said the Helm officer.
"Landing struts lowered."

30 seconds later the ship landed on Coruscant.
"Touchdown, crowd goes wild." I said.

The Black Star is on Coruscant.

That's right, ON Coruscant. Figure I'd use the landing function sooner or later.Joke

The day had arrived...the day whether we find out whether or not people from either the Alliance and the Empire can sit down and talk to each other and enjoy themselves...without killing each other.

"I feel like a total clown in this thing...it itches around the neck too."
Sgt. Solomon laughed, "Sir, you look fine."

I looked in the mirror, "Not bad."
Solomon walked over, "Sir, your blade and sidearm as you requested."

"Thank you Sergeant." I secured the pistol in it's holster, and took the sword in it's sheathe and slung it over my shoulder.
Solomon raised an eyebrow. "Not many people carry Vibroswords anymore just so you know."

"I know, but my best this was the blade I bested my hand to hand instructor with. Sort of a good luck charm I suppose. After all that's happened on and off the holonet, I think the galaxy needs every bit of luck around to keep from descending into chaos."

He merely said, "Yes sir."
"Is Zerek ready?" I asked.

"Sir, Zerek is always ready, for any mission." He responded with pride.
"Good, we leave now. Have them meet me on the ground in five."

"Affirmative sir" He gave a quick salute, then exited the room.

"I got on the comms, and went ship-wide, "This is Commodore Skirata, until my return from the ball, you're on leave...but if I should hear of any misconduct or any bad reports...you'll be working triple shifts for the rest of the month. However, knowing all of you, I shouldn't have that trouble. Skirata out."

I sighed and looked in the mirror again, this time getting a chill down my spine...I got the same kind of chill right before Corellia..."probably nothing", I muttered as I turned to leave.

On the surface, Zerek squad stood at rigid attention.

I'd have to say, it's like Kamino all over again. They look exactly the same in the polished armor of the Old Republic's clones. White armor with blue markings...the markings that used to belong to Vader's Fist, the 501st.

These men were tough, very professional, in battle extremely aggresive, and at ease very social. The only thing different is that these men, these Imperial Marines, were far better than any copy of Jango Fett...these were real men, trained to fight to the last with infinite courage. I was proud to be their CO.

Sgt. Solomon spoke to his squad, "All right Zerek, simple setup. Escort of the Commodore to the Hotel Imperial and return to ship. You hear me troopers?"

The squad barked back, "Sir, yes sir!"

"Solomon, let's head out now."
"Affirmative, troops, move out."
"Sgt. if anything happens, I want you there at a moment's notice to provide any kind of support you can."

He nodded, "You need an assist, we'll come with the cavalry."

Commodore Skirata is en route to the Hotel Imperial.

Morning came, I left the hotel quickly. The sooner I left this place, the better.

As I entered the bridge, I was greeted by Captain Sheridan, "Commodore on the deck!" The bridge crew snapped to attention.
"As you were." They began to sit at their stations again.

"Captain, the designs are finallized I assume?"
"Yes sir, as soon as we reach Loronar, we can get them into production."

"Very good, I'll feel better when we have more than just Defenders as heavy fighters."

"Control, this is the Black Star, requesting permission to depart."
"Black Star you are cleared for departure."

"Helm, take us into orbit and plot a course for Loronar."

The ship lurched as it took off from the ground, gliding through the sky as it ascended. Before long we left orbit of Coruscant, intent on building a new generation of space fighters.

"Course is plotted and hyperdrive standing by."
"Take us to Loronar helm."

I felt a shudder as the ship jumped into hyperspace.

The Black Star is en route to Loronar.

The Black Star dropped out of hyperspace after the trip.
Ahead was Loronar, the planet with the production areas I'm looking for.

Hail them, "This is Commodore Skirata of the Empire, I wish to land. I have business to discuss."

The head of Loronar spoke up "What sort of business Commodore?"
"A new design of fighter I wish to produce, Grand Marshall Carnor Jax has authorized it. Also, to use the fighters my ship will need some retrofitting to the hangar bays."

"Very well, you are being sent landing coordinates." the comm shut off.

"All right, Captain, you have command until I return." I opened an internal comm. Sgt. Solomon, have your men at the port side hangar bay in five minutes."
"Yes sir." Was all he said.

After getting to the hangar bay in full armor gear, Zerek squad greeted me.
All right boys, board the shuttle, let's get to the surface.

As the shuttle left the hangar, I watched the planet get larger in one of the viewports.

Skirata and Zerek Squad are on the surface of Loronar.

The dockwork was going very well. The modifications were nearly complete, and earlier I recieved a transmission that they have completed one squadron of prototype fighters.

I watched as the transport carrying the prototypes rose from the surface to dock. "Clear them for approach" I said.

The signal went out and the transport began a final approach, secinds later they hard docked.
I went down with Captain Sheridan to meet them...Sheridan was going with me because he helped think up the design. Without his help, I'd still be stuck at an efficient design for thrust vectoring.

When we got to the bay, they had already unloaded the fighters, they were magnificent.

"Commodore, allow me to present you with the SA-23 Starfury."
"You've outdone yourself you know?"

Four heavy laser cannons, stronger shot for shot than standard TIE lasers, two Ion Cannons, and six variable warhead hardpoints.
Stronger hull than the TIE Defender, better maneuverability, better agility, and they were around the same speed...at least in theory.

The navigation and targeting computers were newer, different design. The system assists in keeping target lock while doing hiugh speed maneuvers, sort of like a small scale AI.

Unlike the stereotypical design of this kind of fighter, the original design owes nothing to the needs of aerodynamic design as the craft is designed solely for space operations. For instance, the design consists of four engines arranged in a "X" configuration, with the cockpit at the center.
However, due to recent design modifications, it is capable for atmospheric flight.

In theory:
The Starfury's unique relationship between its center of mass and its engines enables it to make rapid pivoting turns to bring its weapons to bear on opponents in any direction, without having to change the vehicle's current direction of movement.

For instance, in a dog fight when a Starfury pilot notices an enemy ship tailing him/her, the pilot can almost instantly turn the fighter around on its axis to position its weapons toward the enemy to attack, without having to shake the enemy's pursuit first.

"Mind if we take these for a spin?" Sheridan asked.
"These prototypes are yours to do with. We have put them through test flights in atmospheric conditions, we will record and moniter your space flight."

I looked over to John who was still staring at them, "Captain, are any of the new fighter launch racks working?"
He broke his gaze and responded "Yes sir, the ventral bay has the modifications completed."

"Good, let's get them prepped and loaded for takeoff."

When the fighters were loaded into the ventral launch racks, me, John and three other pilots got prepped for launch.

We grabbed some pilot suits and proceeded to the launch area. The racks were in the sides of the ventral bay, they would come out of hatches along the sides when the fighters were ready to launch.

We got into the cockpits of the fighters and initialized the preflight system checks. The computer could speak to some extent, seeming rather cold in it's voice, more than I'd like though.

"Engines online, weapons systems online, shields, operational, hyperdrive operational, ejection system operational, hull integrity at one hundred percent. All systems fully functional." The machine said.
I sealed the canopy of the fighter and initialized the launch sequence, the other pilots reported ready status.

The pre-flight checks were complete, all we were waiting for was the launch itself. Suddenly I felt a shudder as the fighter racks moved to launch position. With the rack extended, the clamps holding the ships in place rotated downward to allow us a look out of the belly of the ship.
This modification was approved Grand Admiral Treshan.

Captain Sheridan came in on the comm, "Ready sir?"
I smiled, "Damn right I'm ready, now let's go."

The locking clamps disengaged as the newly christened Starfuries were dropped out of the bottom of the Black Star.

The vector thrusters stabilized the ship in a mere fraction of a second.
The sight was beautiful, the stars, the planet, it was all so different from the cockpit of a starfighter.

"All right gents, let's start playing with these things, learn every detail, every pro, every con. Weapons are set for sim rounds so you couldn't kill each other even if you wanted to. Let's start with simple mauevers." I designated a set of coordinates on the nav comp. "See those coords? Test your speed."

The pilots were eager to test these new craft out, each Fury jumped to life as their engines screamed towards maximum thrust.

As the first test were concluded in minutes, we moved on to more complex stuff, the thrust vectoring system.

"All right men, the next part of the test phase is on the thrusters. This system is similar to the vector control thrusters on the TIE Defender, but there are more of them on this fighter, and they are more efficient, using less fuel. You will practice using this system, Captain Sheridan and I will hunt you three, athen we will trade places to get a feel for the system."

We spent quite some time throughout the day on this exercise...

Lastly, came the fun part, weapons.

"Final test, the weapons loadout. The SA-23 Starfury uses different lasers than any style of TIE fighter. This new design was allowed by Grand Marshall Carnor Jax himself as he saw merit in the design. It's a singular shot rather than a rapid fire weapon. Shot for shot, it's one of the strongest guns on any starfighter, ranking with the old ARC-170 and it's heavy guns. These guns however, are much smaller."

We practiced for a few hours on firing the new weapons, the computer was a great help in maintaining target lock while going at top speed. Other than that, it was still relatively easy to control and pilot.

When we returned to the ship I spoke once more to the chief of Toloran's constuction, "We'll take them, all nine squadrons of them. Excellent work."
He nodded in appreciation, "Thank you Commodore, your complete order will be fulfilled within the next two or three days."

I sat back in my quarters and breathed deep, these new fighters would no doubt see a great deal of action if my suspicions abouta coming struggle are correct. It's not too great of a secret that tempers are flaring and people are starting to itch for conflict.

I sighed and stared out the viewport wondering what's in store for this ship in the future.

And yet, despite the overwhelming influence of alien cultures, and the absence of a true home world and even species, their own language not only survived but changed little; their way of life and their philosophy remained untouched; and their ideals and sense of family, of identity of nation, were only strengthened.

Armor is not what makes a Mandalorian. Armor is simply a manifestation of an impenetrable, unassaliable heart. "

The modifications were done finally, and the last 2 squadrons of Starfuries were being loaded into their launch racks.
"All right, move it people, move it. You aren't getting paid by the hour so let's go!"

The final couple of fighters slid into their launch positions and the docking clamps locked them tight.
Good, time to leave. I thought.
I opened a comm to the surface, "Thank you for all your help, I'll put in a good word for you when I return to Coruscant."

I was given a nod of thanks in reply. I chimed the bridge, "All right, everything's locked up down here, I'm heading up there."
I looked around proudly, the newest fighters in the Galactic Empire, a new generation of ships, I smiled and headed to the bridge.

When I got there, I looked at Captain Sheridan, "Captain, is my flagship ready?"
"The Black Star is fully at your command, Commodore."

"Excellent, helmsman take us back to Coruscant."
I watched as the stars stretched into the familiar form of hyperspace.

The Black Star is headed back to Coruscant.

"Fierfek! They really did it!" I slammed my fist into the comm screen.

They just pulled the trigger on the biggest gun in history.
The Alliance and the Empire were in a formal state of war...
Well we're in the hot seat now aren't we?

I reacted fast, realizing that squadron 16 was still patrolling Corellia. "Communications, send a message to the rest of Squadron 16, inform them to head for Thanagar immediately. After the crates are loaded, set course for Thanagar."

In light of these recent events, the Alliance Thanagarian may pay a visit to her home to "liberate" it...

I thought of the crates I recieved from Ams, six thousand Advanced Recon Commando armors...with all the extra options, electtrified grapple hooks, variable dart launchers, and so on. Just what I had been looking for, no more of these cheap knockoff armors from Phoenix.

The Black Star is heading to Thanagar to rendevous with Squadron 16.
